When you hoop in Hawaii, you may have to do that little extra to create a name for yourself. Well, Roman Gabriel has done way more than that little extra. He's done a lot more than a little. In fact, he has created a legacy and set the path for success for the next generation of players.
Gabriel was a flashy guard in the class of 2026 at Mililani High School. He was the Player of the Year in the OIA West. Gabriel averaged 18 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. He rewrote the Mililani basketball record books in the process. Gabriel owns the school career scoring mark. In addition, he holds the marks for most single game points and most career triples. Even better yet, Gabriel was an equally outstanding student and leader in the classroom as well.
Roman Gabriel has a fun game to watch and to break down. We'll start with the obvious. The young man can fill it up from beyond the arc. Gabriel has that pretty lefty stroke and can fill it up from corner to corner. He's terrific shooting from deep off the catch. He has excellent footwork and catches the pass balanced. Gabriel can fill it up off the bounce as well. Actually, that's one of the most impressive parts of his shooting skills. If the defense steps out to challenge the 3, Gabriel can work right to left and attack off the bounce. He utilizes those good feet and his body control in his dangerous mid range game. Gabriel can pull up on a dime and bury the mid range jumper.
Gabriel's game is much more than his shot though. He's solid on the defensive end as well. Gabriel has a nose for the ball on D and does a great job scoping out the passing lanes. He has a quick reaction time, allowing him to deflect or steal a lot of passes and create instant offense from turnovers. Gabriel is pretty underrated as an all around athlete as well. He has great straight line speed with the ball and can push it out into transition. Gabriel can get up off the ground and finish with 1 hand above the rim.
Roman Gabriel may have created a legacy, but I'm willing to bet that his greatness is just beginning. The young star is ready to take his game to Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon next season. It's an NAIA program with a nice history of success, twice reaching the NAIA Sweet 16. Gabriel could very well be a key piece of getting them back there for the first time since 2017. The greatness that we mentioned - that's not just in basketball. We're willing to bet that Gabriel will achieve greatness in all aspects of his life and will continue to be a role model and example for those around him.
